Lake Matheson

This short online travel piece was written for Road Trippers in August 2017

On a sunny, calm day Lake Matheson offers postcard-perfect views of snow-capped Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman reflected in the dark waters, making the short walk to the viewing jetty one of the most rewarding Fox Glacier walks.

The quick 5km drive out on Cook Flat Road from the centre of Fox Glacier is well marked. From the car park, the route heads over a wooden suspension bridge, crossing the Clearwater River, and along a well-formed forest path. The 20-minute walk to the viewpoint at the jetty is a slightly undulating 1km through a tall ancient forest and is wheelchair accessible.

Return via the same route or complete the 2.6km circuit (not wheelchair accessible) around one of New Zealand’s most stunning lakes. Allow between one-and-half to two hours for the circuit. More if you like to stop and enjoy the scenery and birdlife along the way.

For stunning photos: head out at sunrise, or as early as you can make it. This will give you the best shot at a clear mirror lake before the ducks and breeze add gentle ripples. Dusk would be the next best photo opportunity, but if you’re lucky you can get great views and photos at any time of day.

If you’re passing anywhere near Fox Glacier this little gem should be on your must-see-and-do list.
